What is Hatua Likoni?
Hatua Likoni is a community-led NGO working to reduce poverty and unempoyment in Likoni, Mombasa. Through scholarships, mentoring and career guidance, Hatua Likoni helps Likoni's top students gain the skills, credentials and networks they need to contribute to and benefit from Kenya's growing economy.
The Likoni Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to top students from poor families within Likoni to ensure that our community's talented youth gain the skills and credentials they need to enter the modern economy. Weekly mentoring sessions focused on decision making, skill building and career development prepare our students for life after school.
Likoni's Community Library offers students a well-resourced place to learn and study. The library is equipped with over 4,500 books and 10 computers, and is a forum for community trainings.
Hatua is a swahili word meaning A Step Forward. Hatua helps Likoni step forward by fostering home-grown development that empowers individuals to determine their own future and the future of Likoni.
Hatua Likoni seeks highly motivated interns and volunteers from Kenya and around the world who are ready to gain experience in international community development through helping us run our programs.
Volunteers and Interns working with Hatua stay at Pungu Villa, a three bedroom cottage on Shelly Beach, with electricity, modern bathrooms, security and ocean views. Orientation takes place during volunteers' first week with Hatua and includes a 5 night homestay, Swahili language lessons and city tours.
